A gender identity is an integral part of an individual’s psychological being. It consists of various relational facets of being masculine or feminine or even both or neither. It also includes more complex psychological gender identities that span across a gender spectrum. The development of a psychological gender identity is a complex interplay of biological and sociocultural factors and the person’s psychology. The recognition and acceptance of psychological gender identity play a key role in one’s agency, which is critically important for holistic emotional health and self-esteem. For example, someone who is assigned male at birth but identifies as female, which she embodies in her gender expression, illustrates the nature of gender identity.
