Self-control is a term employed to discuss the ability to restrain one’s emotional, impulsive, and behavioral responses in pursuit of a sustained goal. This entails the need to postpone rewards, control one’s anxiety, and overcome various kinds of temptations. To psychologists, self-control is envisaged as a skill within the framework of executive functioning, willpower, and management of emotions. Greater self-control improves the likelihood of performing well, having stable relationships, and being mentally stable. It has been shown that self-control to some extent can be enhanced through mindfulness techniques, self-practice, and self-awareness. For example, taking time to revise for an exam instead of watching a film is self-control worked towards a purpose.
