Self-efficacy

Self-efficacy describes an individual’s ability to plan and carry out the activities needed to accomplish certain objectives. Psychologist Albert Bandura describes the motivational role self-efficacy plays in learning and in the development of psychological resilience. Someone with high self-efficacy will demonstrate confidence and persistence; someone with low self-efficacy will avoid action and exhibit self-doubt. Psychologically, the development of self-efficacy enables individuals to confront and master challenges, which constitutes an advanced level of performance. Self-efficacy is primary in the psychological disciplines of cognitive behavioural therapy and educational psychology. For example, a self-efficacious student will invest the effort and practice needed to attain mastery of a challenging subject.
