A perturbation is the temporary emotional, mental, or physical disturbance which causes alteration in the functioning level of the affected individual. This is commonly used in clinical and cognitive contexts, describing periods of disorganization and pronounced emotional sensitivity, where the individual’s customary mechanisms of regulation and management may tend to collapse. For instance, psychological perturbation which results in acute confusion, emotional flooding, and rush behaviors may be caused by the experience of loss, particular stressors, or even the facing of stress. These periods of imbalance are often disruptive and transformative at the same time since they bring adaptation, growth, and even crises, all of which are dependent on the strength of the individual and their support systems. In therapeutic situations, recognition of a mental perturbation helps the clinician identify and understand the emotional turning points which may be catalysts for drastic behavioral and psychological changes or breakthroughs.
