Exogenous encompasses influences, factors, or stimuli lying outside the individual or system, impacting behavior, cognition, or development. In psychology, every emotion or thought that is an outcome of some external stimuli exerted on a person is termed an exogenous variable. For instance, environmental stressors such as sirens, primary social factors, or even social events such as losing a job are termed exogenous, as they originate outside one’s internal psychological frame. In cognitive psychology, exogenous attention describes the process whereby external stimuli such as a sudden light or a loud noise capture attention with no conscious awareness. Exogenous factors are also important in developmental psychology because parenting, cultural, or even socioeconomic factors are external conditions that affect growth and behavior. Understanding exogenous factors enables psychologists to distinguish between internal perceptions and external influences as the basis for every assessment, intervention, and even research in psychology.
