In psychology, ‘decompensation’ implies an individual’s mental or emotional equilibrium has broken down, usually caused by strain or intrapsychic conflict. It occurs when an individual has exhausted all their coping mechanisms regarding anxiety, trauma, or psychiatric symptoms. Decompensation can result in extreme emotional distress, psychosocial withdrawal, or even a psychotic episode. Knowledge of this process enables clinicians to restore order as quickly as possible through psychotropic medication and/or psychotherapy. For example, when a person diagnosed with schizophrenia has an exacerbation of symptoms due to extreme stress and noncompliance with their medication, this is an example of decompensation.
