Pseudopsychology

Pseudopsychology is the use of practices and systems which claim to use psychological components but is not proven to use rigorous methodology and is unscientific. Some of the more well-known examples include astrology, phrenology, and unsupported and unproven personality tests. Without rigorous examination, pseudopsychology may seem reliable but is overly dependent on anecdotal proof, ambiguous claims, and confirmation bias. Some people are drawn to pseudoscientific ideas because they offer enigmas of complex behavior or a sense of control. In spreading misinformation, the misuse of pseudopsychology is likely to make people make irrational decisions. Noticing pseudopsychology and psychology which is based on evidence requires constructive thought, and understanding science and its methodology. More psychologists are needed to use evidence to promote pseudopsychology awareness which is critical for the more responsible use of psychological terminology and improved practices for mental health care.
