The definition of autonomy is the ability of individuals to make choices and control their actions without interference. In Psychology, autonomy is associated with self-determination and personal choices. Setting personal goals, assessing potential actions, and behaving consistently with self-identified principles and one’s identity all constitute autonomy. Integration of autonomy into one’s personality is especially important during the adolescent stage, as they start to diffuse control held by their parents and construct their own viewpoints. In counseling, promotion of autonomy helps clients to own their decisions and builds trust in their evaluative abilities. Individuals with healthy autonomy can constructively maintain distance in social relationships. Autonomy is a key component of motivation and psychological development, emotional balance and overall psychological growth.
