Insight learning has to do with solving a problem by coming up with a solution instead of through trial and error. This form of problem-solving was demonstrated by Wolfgang Köhler with chimpanzees. In one study, a chimp named Sultan, with a banana out of reach, was able to ‘see’ the solution by combining two sticks after a period of contemplation. Insight learning emphasizes the importance of thinking processes and problem-solving involving perception, mental restructuring, and reasoning. This phenomenon can be observed in people’s ability to solve puzzles and complicated issues after prolonged effort. Insight learning is different from gradual learning because of the distinct ‘aha’ moment that brings clarity. Instead of focusing on practice, problem-solving emphasizes the high level of organization of information in one’s mind.
